Top 100 Linked Knitting Blogs

The Problem

Finding great knitting blogs is a challenge.

Most of us can name a handful that we’ve liked over the years, but who else is out there? With so many new sites popping up on a daily basis, how can the average knitter discover them?

If you are on Ravelry and have some time, you can troll its forums and recent uploads to see what’s happening, though not everyone there has a blog. You can revisit the blog rolls of sites you’ve already read, assuming they have one and it’s up to date and doesn’t lead to dead ends.

Typing “knitting” into sites such as Technorati or Blog Catalog will give you results, but with Technorati, it skews towards sites that have knitting in their title. Most blogs are more creatively named.

Blog Catalog is good at what is does, but not many knitters have joined and its ranking system is confusing.

I hate Best of the Web awards because they are usually based on voting. Whoever can get the most readers to scurry over to cast a ballot wins. It’s a high school popularity contest on internet steroids. And how do you define good and then rank it? What I like may not be your cup of tea.

A Solution

In my continuing series on Knitting Blog Stats, I’ll look at our community from a numerical point of view.

• Who has links – the top 100
• Who has links – the up and coming 250
• Who gets traffic
• Who attracts RSS readers

Each metric showcases a different strength. One blog might be great at drawing Google traffic. Another may be well loved by its readers and have sky high RSS numbers. A third could be successful at building a community among her fellow bloggers. The top blogs excel at two out of three.

I’m starting with linkage because it has the most participants. Today showcases the top 100 linked knitting blogs per Technorati. With the Up and Coming 250, I’ll explain how a site makes these Linked Lists and how your blog can be part of the next yearly update.

How To Interpret The Results

As you scan the top 100 and venture to Technorati to check out the numbers, keep in mind that its rankings fluctuate daily. Any authority that is six months and a day old falls off. If others right behind you received more links yesterday, your rank will slip. The good news is with such a dynamic environment, there is always room for newcomers.

A blog’s placement should be thought of as currently occupying a zone of linkage within the knitting community, rather than an absolute position.

This list was generated the fourth week of January 2009. My next Top 100 edition will hopefully post in early 2010, giving plenty of time for those interested to increase their links.
