Top 250 Up And Coming Linked Knitting Blogs

In the days ahead, the Knitting Blog Stat Series will finish with sites getting great traffic and attracting RSS readers.

First, let’s quickly go over how I selected the blogs and how Technorati ratings work.

How Selected

My goal is to find great knitting blogs.

Not craft blogs with some knitting content, not etsy blogs with yarn for sale, and not activist blogs with sticks to click.

People who scan a top knitting blog list want to find sites dedicated to knitting.

All bloggers producing knitted fabric as their main topic, be it with straight needles, circular, loom board, knitting machine, or circular sock knitting machine, were eligible for consideration. The overwhelming majority of sites are currently focused on hand knitting.

Now I realize it can take awhile to complete a project and blog entries must be filled with the happenings of your life. My rule of thumb was if an average knitter stumbled upon your site, how would she classify it based on your current entries and categories. Are you a craft site first or a purling gal? Gardener or knitter? You get the idea.

Lots fell into a gray zone. I relied on Technorati’s tag cloud as the final judge. If knitting, or knitting related terms such as socks, yarn, spinning, etc. were prominent compared to other tags, you were in.

It is not my goal to censor. It is my goal to provide a yearly updated list of fantastic knitting blogs to which others are linking, visiting, and adding to their RSS readers.

How To Stay Selected

If you were declared a knitting site, but did any of the following, I usually deleted you because visiting was too frustrating:

  • Blared music when I entered
  • Entrapped and prevented me from using the back arrow to easily exit
  • Required login to enter
  • Had popup windows
  • Launched a video when I entered

Also, sites needed to be written in English and have relatively recent posts.

Technorati Rank – What Is Authority and Blog Reactions?

Once selected, your position on the list was entirely determined by Technorati rank, authority, and blog reactions.

What is Authority?

…authority is determined by the number of unique blogs indexed by Technorati that have linked to yours in the past 180 days. Thus, as links from blogs age out of this window and new links are added, your authority may rise, fall, or stay the same over time.

What Are Blog Reactions?

Technorati defines Blog Reactions as the number of links to the blog’s home page or its posts from other blogs in the Technorati index. A subset of blog reactions, Technorati Authority is the number of unique blogs linking to this blog over the last six months. The higher the number, the more Technorati Authority the blog has. To see reactions to specific posts, you can find them listed on Technorati post pages.

Why Isn’t My Blog Listed?

Have you submitted your site to Technorati? If your blog isn’t listed with Technorati or has no authority, you can’t be ranked.

I may have missed you. There are literally thousands of knitting blogs. I spent the last week of January visiting over 2000 of them. I started with ones I knew, went down their blog rolls, found more, went down those new blog rolls, and so on. I kept branching out until my database was large enough to be meaningful.

Your rank today in Technorati may be different from when I visited. Due to the nature of Technorati’s authority system, rankings fluctuate daily.

If you want to be considered for the next update, send me an email or leave a comment with your blog address and current ranking. In the future, I will only be adding sites to the database from knitters that opt in by contacting me. The internet is too big and my time too short to repeat this project from scratch. My family needs me back.

If you’re still updating this list, please consider my knitting blog for inclusion. It’s called “The Knitting Needle and the Damage Done”, and on it I critique and ridicule knitting patterns from the latest issue of knitting magazines and write about interesting and ludicrous knitting-related topics. I launched it November 10, 2012 and have posted every day since. And, not incidentally, thanks for your list!
